The persuasive power of fear is often utilized to capture audience attention. However, the appropriateness of fear levels without eliciting negative reactions remains uncertain due to a lack of specific research. This is due to conflicting views among communication, marketing, psychology, and neuroscience scholars regarding fear levels that enhance attention but have fewer side effects. This study aims to determine effective fear levels for capturing youth attention in the context of problematic gaming (PG). Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted in two sessions with 9 active youth gamers who have been playing video games for more than 2 hours daily for the past two years, utilizing the severity variable of the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) threat. FGD data were analyzed using Atlas.Ti version 8.0 software to identify patterns and themes related to the elicited fear levels and their effects on players. The study findings indicate that moderate fear levels are effective in capturing the attention of young video game players and can reduce the risk of rejection or boomerang effects, whereas excessive fear threats are at risk of such effects. This study suggests the use of appropriate fear levels in PSAs targeting youth attention. Indirectly, the study offers valuable insights to help reconcile conflicting views among scholars. Determining the appropriateness of fear levels enables more effective and low-risk design of future PSAs.

2023-10-31T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://insaniah.umk.edu.my/journal/index.php/insaniah/article/view/151 Digital Literacy to Digital Fluency Among Parents in Mediating Adolescents’ Online Safety 2023-12-05T07:39:23+00:00 Haslina Mohd Hassan linahash1992@gmail.com Mohd Azul Mohamad Salleh azul@ukm.edu.my Abdul Latiff Ahmad alba@ukm.edu.my
Adolescents are known to be more digitally literate and proficient in technology mechanism than their parents. Nevertheless, it is questionable that adolescents can distinguish either its usage holds positive or negative implications towards them. Hence, adolescents need their parents to supervise and mediate their online activities. This research examined digital literacy knowledge and skills by identifying the differences based on Malaysian parent’s demographic factors. Besides, this research intended to create awareness among parents to be aware of their digital literacy and mediate their adolescents’ safe Internet use. The study involved 384 parents of adolescents aged 13 to 17 from Klang Valley area in Malaysia. It adopted the digital literacy scale and Internet skills scale to measure parents’ digital literacy knowledge and skills using the Internet and devices by employing a quantitative questionnaire method. The researcher then analysed the data through descriptive analysis on parents’ device usage, Internet usage among parents and parental monitoring on adolescents’ Internet use. Furthermore, this research attended an Interdependent t-test and One-way ANOVA to recognise parents’ digital literacy level of differences based on gender, age group, Internet use experiences and professional background. The conclusion reported no significant difference between parents’ digital literacy according to gender. Nonetheless, factors such as age group, Internet use experience and professional background constituted significant differences with parents’ digital literacy. The study found that parents are lack in skills component. Therefore, this study suggested that parents today need to enhance their capability and equip themselves with digital fluency to cope with the mercurial technology context in mediating adolescent online safety.
2023-10-31T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://insaniah.umk.edu.my/journal/index.php/insaniah/article/view/238 Penggunaan Media Sosial dan Kaedah Fiqh Dalam Penentuan Peluang Kerjaya Dalam Industri Pelancongan dan Makanan Halal Di Hotel Sekitar Negeri Sembilan: Satu Tinjauan 2023-12-06T03:39:05+00:00 Muhammad Adnan Pitchan adnan86@ukm.edu.my Siti Nur Husna Abd Rahman 2022416422@student.uitm.edu.my Rafidah Mohd rafidah2262@uitm.edu.my Nursafra Mohd nursafra@uitm.edu.my
